Hookah Charcoal Guide for India — Everything You Need to Know

The charcoal you use can make or break your hookah session. This guide covers the best types of hookah charcoal available in India, how to light them, and expert tips for optimal performance with Serbetli tobacco.

Types of Hookah Charcoal

1. Natural Coconut Coals (Recommended)

  • Made from: Compressed coconut shell
  • Burn time: 60-90 minutes
  • Taste: Clean, no flavor interference
  • Heat: Consistent, even heat
  • Price: ₹200-400 per kg

This is what we recommend for all Serbetli products. Brands like Cocobrico, Tom Cococha, and Titanium are excellent choices.

2. Quick-Light Coals (Not Recommended)

  • Made from: Compressed charcoal with chemical accelerant
  • Burn time: 30-45 minutes
  • Taste: Chemical taste, especially in first 5 minutes
  • Convenience: Lights with a regular lighter

While convenient, quick-lights add a harsh chemical taste that ruins premium tobacco like Serbetli. Avoid if possible.

3. Japanese-Style Silver Coals

  • Low heat, very clean burn
  • Good for heat-sensitive flavors
  • Less common in India

How to Light Natural Coals

  1. Place coals on an electric burner or single-coil stove
  2. Heat for 4-5 minutes on one side
  3. Flip and heat another 4-5 minutes
  4. Coals should be glowing orange on ALL sides
  5. Never use partially lit coals — causes headaches and bad taste

Important: Do NOT use a gas stove without a metal grate. The coals can fall through and damage your stove.

How Many Coals to Use

  • Small bowl: 2 coals
  • Medium bowl: 2-3 coals
  • Large/phunnel bowl: 3 coals
  • With HMD (Kaloud): 2-3 coals inside the device

Coal Management During Session

  • Rotate coals every 15 minutes
  • Ash your coals by tapping gently with tongs
  • If smoke gets harsh, remove one coal temporarily
  • Add fresh coals at the 45-minute mark for extended sessions
